The Comptroller – General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (CGIS), Mr Idris Jere, on Wednesday warned officers to stay away from extortion and sharp practises in the processing of passports.

Jere gave the warning at the opening of a three-day workshop for officers and men of the Provost and Servicom Units .

    of NIS Zone A.

    Lagos.

He said that such acts constitute impediments in the process of obtaining the passports.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the workshop was organised by officer in-charge of the Zone, the Assistant Comptroller – General of Immigration Service (ACGIS ), Mr Olakunle Osisanya, to brighten- up the officials.

Jere mandated all officers and men working in passport offices to maintain high level of discipline, and professionalism in their conduct.

According to him, NIS executes a lot of statutory functions, among which is the issuance of passport and other travel documents.

He said these statuory functions called for discipline from people within and outside the service.

The comptroller-general  said the objective of the workshop was to drive home the need  to respect the appointment system, towards achieving excellent service.

The NIS boss told the participants that integrity of the appointment system of dates would be monitored and that any officer caught extorting applicants would face discipline.

He said that the appointment system of dates allows proper queuing management system.

Jere advised applicants that needed  to obtain passport to apply well ahead of time to avoid unnecessary anxiety by logging into the NIS portal (www.

    passport.

    immigration.

    gov.

ng), “After the log-in, the applicant should fill the application form, make payment, choose a date and processing centre of their choice.

“The applicant would then proceed to the centre on the choosen date with the required documents'” he said.

NAF eliminates terrorists leader, Shanono in Kaduna

The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) has eliminated a terrorists leader, Alhaji Shanono, and 18 of his foot soldiers in Kaduna State.

The Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters,, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that the terrorists were eliminated following sustained air operations in the North West. According to him, no less than 26 kidnapped victims earlier held by the insurgents were released as a result of the air strikes.

He added that the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, had commended troops for the sustained air strike against terrorists operating in the zone.

“One of such strikes which occurred on Aug. 9, resulted in the elimination of a well known terrorist leader operating in Kaduna State.

“Indeed, following receipt of intelligence on same day, that a well known  insurgents kingpin, Alhaji Shanono, had scheduled a meeting with his foot soldiers at Ukambo, a village about 131 km from Kaduna.

“The Air Component of operation `Whirl Punch` dispatched aircraft for interdiction mission at the location.

“Overhead the location, insurgents were sighted under clusters of trees at the foot of Ukambo high ground and after ensuring the absence of civilian settlements within the location, the crew received the authorisation to strike.

“Feedback from local sources disclosed that over 30 rifles and 20 motorbikes were destroyed while about 18  insurgents, including Alhaji Shanono, were  neutralised while others sustained various degree of injuries.

“However, sources also revealed that not less than 26 kidnapped victims earlier held by the insurgents were released as a result of the airstrike,” he added.

Gabkwet said that the CAS had reviewed the ongoing air operations against the insurgents and other criminal elements in the country.

“From the briefings received by the CAS, it is evident that so far, the directive given to the operational commanders is yielding the requisite outcome,“ he said.

The Director said Amao had addressed the commanders and reminded them of the need to remain steadfast and focused on the task ahead.

`’We can’t afford to let down our guards,” the CAS told the commanders.

Meanwhile, the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East had conducted successful air interdiction missions on insurgents’ targets in Borno.

“One of such operations was conducted on Aug. 6 at Gazuwa, about 1.2 kilometers to Gargash, after intelligences revealed that infighting for supremacy was underway between Shekau`s faction and Islamic State of West Africa (ISWAP) faction.

“The state of confusion and disorder between the two factions presented an opportunity for a surprise strike by NAF pilots which was carried out using two aircraft types.

“It should be noted that though the map coordinates led the pilots to the exact site of the infighting, the location also had an ISWAP flag hoisted on the structure and three solar panels on the rooftop.

“Intelligence received and corroborated by local sources revealed the strike was a success as the insurgents did not anticipate it with several eliminated and others injured.

“ According to the director, the sustained air strikes have disorganised the insurgents who had begun to realise that they were fighting a lost cause that would lead to their death.

“Most are said to be contemplating surrendering just like others before them,“ he said.

We engage consultant in waste management for clean, healthy environment- Oyo Govt

Oyo State Government says it engaged the service of a consultant in the management of waste to enhance maintenance of clean, healthy environment and make the state habitable.

Mr Abiodun Oni, the state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, made this known on Wednesday at a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the state government in partnership with Mottainai Recycling Ltd. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the meeting held with traders and artisans was aimed at proffering collective solutions to waste management problems.

According to Oni, the present administration in Oyo State is harnessing opportunities in public and private waste management to drive sustainable city and urban circular economy.

He said that the state government meant to make life bearable for residents with the involvement of a consultant -Mottainai Recycling Ltd. “We have had challenges of cleaning the city and in our determination to keep our cities clean made us to engage the stakeholders as well.

“This new initiative will make our environment clean, while we also target a waste to wealth initiative,” he said.

The commissioner, explaining that traders would pay a little token to get their waste cleared with the new initiative, urged the traders to cooperate with the consultant for the purpose of engaging the company to be materialised.

He further explained that the initiative was launched, thereby, resulting in overhauling of the state’s solid waste management system.

“We must be able to challenge the people and communities who produced majority of the waste to exercise greater responsibility in the disposal of their waste, while also exploring funding strategies to address the issues,” Oni said.

The commissioner implored every trader and artisan operating in the state to embrace the “new waste management of zero waste, zero budget initiative”.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, said that government alone could not make the state clean without involving all the stakeholders.

Olatunbosun appealed to all major stakeholders and residents to support the state government in its efforts to make the state clean.

Also, the Managing Director, Mottainai Recycling, Mr Ade Adewuyi, said the new initiative would allow residents of the state to pay little or nothing for waste management.

Adewuyi said his firm was set to sort and buy wastes from waste creators and generators in the state.

On behalf of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Mr Kazeem Gbadamosi, the Chairman, Lagelu Local Government, called on the consultant to partner with the council’s management for effective delivery.

Gbadamosi said that waste management should be a collective responsibility of all, urging residents to cooperate with the new consultant.

Commenting, a Market Leader, Mrs Labake Lawal, enjoined the state government to consider the reintroduction of the weekly environmental sanitation.

Lawal said that market leadership was ready to work with the state government and the new consultant.

Lagos residents to pay more for waste management — LAWMA

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) says the authority is proposing a 50 per cent  increase in waste bill  across board for Lagos residents.

Mr Ibrahim Odumboni, the Managing Director of LAWMA, made this known during a news conference on Wednesday in Lagos.

Odumboni said that the price increase was due to the high cost of operation by the Private Sector Participants (PSP) operators.

According to him, the cost of Diesel used by PSP operators increased from N278 per litre in January to about N875, representing 300 per cent increment.

”We are in the process of having an extensive pricing review for PSP services offered to the households knowing fully well the economic reality.

”Also we are not introducing any change that will turn away consumers of our product.

”While the high cost is about 300 per cent, we are proposing 50 per cent increase across board,” Odumboni said.

The CEO said that the governor was also providing additional subsidies for fuel other than the existing subsidies given to PSPs to share.

He noted that the state was generating 13,000 metric tonnes of wastes daily, adding that the trucks were being run with diesel 100 per cent.

He appealed to Lagos residents to patronise PSP operators instead of the illegal cart pushers who dumped refuse indiscriminately on the roads Odumboni said that the authority was considering the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to power PSP trucks to address the problem of high energy cost.

The LAWMA helmsman also warned that the authority would prosecute any household that did not have a bin from October 1 ”If you don’t have a bin from October 1, you may be prosecuted,” Odumboni said.

He said that it was wrong for a compound of several houses to have just one waste bin.

According to him, sanitary officers will go round from house to house to advocate on the importance of adopting a bin and sorting of wastes.

He said that the agency was working on the creation of Transfer Loading Stations (TLS) in all the local government areas of the state, for fast and smooth evacuation of waste around the metropolis.

The managing director hinted of imminent establishment of a ‘bottle-to-bottle’ recycling centre in Lagos.

He said that the project was initiated in partnership with a private company who would source their raw materials from the plastic waste generated across the Lagos metropolis.

According to him, Lagos will soon become the hub of recycling in West Africa.

Odumboni said that the authority planned to set up 30 recycling centres across the state by the end of the year.

He said the centres were expected to boost the Lagos recycling initiative, which apart from its economic benefits, would mitigate the challenge of plastic pollution.

Also, the President of Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN), Mr. David Oriyomi, said the price of diesel negatively affected their operation.

He thanked the governor for the subsidy offered to PSP operators, adding that service charges needed to be reviewed to reflect current economic realities.

Waste Management Offences: Lagos jails 83, fines 3,000, penalises 1,200 persons

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) says a total of 83 persons had been convicted and jailed for waste management offences in the last one year.

The Managing Director of LAWMA, Mr Ibrahim Odumboni, said this on Wednesday during a news briefing on the state of affairs on waste management in Lagos, updates on activities from the beginning of 2022 till August.

Odumboni also said that over 1,200 persons were penalised to sweep the environment and over 3,000 persons fined, having been found guilty of committing various forms of offences relating to indiscriminate disposal of waste in Lagos.

He said that the prosecution of the offenders was necessitated to deter bad culture to waste management.

“Eighty-three people were jailed last year from waste related offences.

Over 1,200 did community services – they joined our sweepers to sweep and do the job very well and over 3,000 were fined.

“But the most important thing for us is, why don’t we ensure we do the right thing.

“For people out there, who continue to migrate and dump waste indiscriminately, any time you are caught, you would be held responsible and would face the wrath of the law,” the LAWMA MD said.

According to him, the enforcement team set up by the agency has become very active, and has ceased over 1,400 carts across the state in the last two months.

He said that the team would ensure that  a much more formal, agreeable and consistent system of waste was introduced into the society.

Odumboni said that truck pushers were also guilty of dumping waste in canals and drainage systems, causing menace of drainage blockages informing floods.

“Having extended hands of fellowship to cart pushers on how they can work with the agency to formalise their operations, the agency would not take it lightly with those who kick against the hands of fellowship and rules of engagement.

“For anyone who does not have an identity, who poses security threats to the state, who refuses to follow the law and put the lives of Lagosians in danger, there is going to be zero-tolerance on that, “And so, we would continue in our operations to get rid of cart pushers in Lagos,” he said.

He frowned at mischievous offenders who attack workers and facilities of the agency, saying it had fostered engagement with law enforcement agents to bring culprits to book.

The LAWMA boss said that the agency was now working with LASTMA, the Neighborhood Watch and other security agencies to prosecute those caught on the live time metropolitan cameras across the state.

He said that each of the over 20 million residents of the state generated a minimum of 0.65kg, averaging 13,000 metric tonnes in all, demanding no less than 650 heavy-duty trucks to evacuate them.

Odumboni said that the agency had been straightened to the task to ensure delivering excellent services, with the aim of clearing everything on daily basis.

He said that the number of PSP trucks operating in the state had been upscaled under the present Gov.Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration from about 627 to over 1,100; higher than those of New York. According to him, about 150 of the 1,100 trucks are operated by LAWMA.

He said that the rising cost of diesel from the first quarter of 2022 had posed huge challenges for operators.
