More than half a million people sign up to volunteer at FIFA events

The FIFA volunteer program (www.FIFA.com) brings together people from all over the world; More than 80% of potential volunteers are from Africa and Asia; The deadline to submit applications for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ is Sunday 31 July. More than half a million people have already signed up for FIFA's global volunteer platform.

The FIFA volunteer program, renewed in December 2020, is the largest of its kind in sport and allows everyone who registers on the registration portal to apply to participate in any FIFA tournament in the future.

The number of volunteers has skyrocketed from 100,000 to 500,000 since October 2021 and, unsurprisingly, the fast-approaching FIFA World Cup™ has proven to be the biggest draw.

"This increase in people subscribing to the platform is really remarkable," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“The increase in numbers shows that our volunteer program and platform is becoming a truly global community, with incredible interest in participating in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.” “Volunteers play a key role at all FIFA tournaments.

Along with their energy and smiles, they provide a unique atmosphere, giving of their time and expertise to ensure football continues to flourish.

Once again, the volunteers have shown their commitment and love for our sport, and we are truly grateful for that.” The iconic figure has also impressed FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura.

“It is extraordinary to reach this important milestone so quickly after the relaunch of the program, and we are very pleased,” she said.

“For football to continue to thrive, volunteers are absolutely essential.

We can see the popularity and love for our sport shine through in these fantastic volunteers.

It is a very special community and we look forward to expanding it even more.” The number of volunteers at all the events is fascinating and, with the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ on the horizon, the regions closest to Qatar are strongly represented: 43.2% are from Asia and 40.2% from Africa.

English is the most widely spoken language among applicants (94.4%), while 23.8% speak French, 16.7% Spanish and 3.8% German.

Almost half of the volunteers – 48.9%, specifically – speak a language other than the four mentioned.

Overall, 53.1% of volunteers are employed, while 34.4% are students.

Regarding the age groups, those between 24 and 34 years old lead (42.9%) ahead of those between 18 and 24 years old, who represent 36%, while those between 35 and 44 years old comprise 15.6 %.

and 5.5% of volunteers are 45 years of age or older.

Applications for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Volunteer Programme, the largest program of its kind in Qatari history, will close on Sunday 31 July at 23:59 Doha time.

The program aims to bring people together through football to host the first FIFA World Cup in the Middle East and the Arab world, while celebrating their mutual love of the game and showing the true spirit of Qatar.

It will put 20,000 passionate volunteers at the center of tournament operations and create a proud legacy of volunteerism in the region.

“Billions of people will be watching when the biggest soccer event in the world takes place in our home this November.

As residents of Qatar, we have the opportunity to support the tournament through volunteering.

It has been amazing to see the enthusiasm of the candidates to join the team of volunteers,” said Dr. Susan Borden, a US citizen who is part of the pioneer group that is interviewing the applicants.

Interviews will be completed on August 13, when the tournament reaches the milestone of 100 days to go.

Members of the public over the age of 18, whether passionate about football or simply interested in the volunteer experience, have until Sunday, July 31, to apply to participate in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 at https:// volunteer.FIFA.com, which is also the place to go to register for other FIFA events.

Nigerians in South Africa say FG addressing their problems

The Nigeria Union South Africa (NUSA) has said that many issues affecting Nigerians in that country are already being addressed by Mr Andrew Idi, the countryImageTitleSummaryCategoriesAuthorDatecategories_hfilter‘s new Consul General.

President of the union Mr Collins Mgbo revealed this in a statement sent to the News Agency of Nigeria from Johannesburg on  Wednesday.

Mgbo expressed the union’s appreciations to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama and Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa,  the Chief Executive Officer,  Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, among others, for the efforts they are making to tackle their problems.

He acknowledged the speed and urgency with which Idi began to address pending issues affecting Nigerians in the southern African country within the short period he  assumed duty.

“One of such issues is the xenophobic sentiment against foreign nationals.

The consul general had met with the law enforcement agencies to discuss how to solve the problem and so far xenophobia  has reduced significantly.

“The new consul general has resolved the issue of excessive charges that Nigerians complained about during the tenure of the previous administration in the consulate and has removed all the charges within a short period of time.

“He has resolved the issue of passport racketeerng that was the order of the day at the consulate general’s office in Johannesburg and brought dignity back to the consulate,’’ the NUSA president said.

“Idi has been a blessing to the community since his arrival; he has attended to all the cases that affect Nigerians from province to province, week to week and has on many occasions provided financial support to Nigerians desperately in need.

“The new consul general has proven that Nigerians can be proud in a foreign country.

We are aware that groups of individuals are trying to tarnish his image already because they can no longer do as they wish at the consulate.

“But we can assure the Federal Government and Nigerians in South Africa that we are in good hands and we believe that it will continue to be better,” he added.

Mgbo noted that the much that Idi had achieved so far, showed that he is the right man for the job and that the decision of the federal government in appointing him was a step in the right direction.

“NUSA assures the consul general that we will continue to work with him and assist him as community leaders to achieve set goals and objectives, especially issues that affect the welfare of Nigerians resident in South Africa “NUSA also assures the consul general that the organisation shall continue to encourage Nigerians in South Africa to remain law abiding and to represent the country positively since they are witnessing a sense of sanity this far.

US sanctions Putin ‘girlfriend,’ more oligarchs for ‘complicity’ in Ukraine war

The United States blacklisted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s purported girlfriend and the tycoon owner of the second-largest estate in London Tuesday in the latest round of sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine.

Also hit with US business bans were several other oligarchs believed to be close to Putin, four officials Russia has named to administer occupied territories in Ukraine, and around two dozen high technology institutes and companies, including key state-backed electronics entities.

The US Treasury announced sanctions on Putin associate and billionaire Andrey Grigoryevich Guryev, who owns the Witanhurst estate, the second-largest estate in London after Buckingham Palace.

Guryev is the founder and former deputy chairman of PhosAgro, a major supplier to global fertilizer markets.

He and his son were hit with financial sanctions, which ban US businesses — including banks with US branches — from transactions with them, and freeze their assets under US jurisdictions.

The Treasury also blacklisted Guryev’s Caribbean-based 81-meter (267 feet) yacht Alfa Nero, which puts it at risk of seizure.

However, the Treasury said Alfa Nero “has reportedly shut off its location tracking hardware in order to avoid seizure.

”The Treasury also imposed sanctions on Alina Kabaeva, a former Olympic gymnast widely described as Putin’s girlfriend, and Natalya Popova, the wife of Kirill Dmitriev, the manager of the Russian government’s massive sovereign wealth fund.

The Treasury said Popova works for the technology firm Innopraktika, which is run by one of Putin’s daughters.

“As innocent people suffer from Russia’s illegal war of aggression, Putin’s allies have enriched themselves and funded opulent lifestyles,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.

“The Treasury Department will use every tool at our disposal to make sure that Russian elites and the Kremlin’s enablers are held accountable for their complicity in a war that has cost countless lives,” Yellen said.

Viktor Filippovich Rashnikov, one of Russia’s largest taxpayers, and two subsidiaries of his MMK, which is among the world’s largest steel producers, also were hit with sanctions.

In a joint action, the State Department imposed sanctions, including visa restrictions, on oligarchs “running massive revenue-generating companies,” including Dmitry Aleksandrovich Pumpyanskiy, Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko and Alexander Anatolevich Ponomarenko.

In addition, nearly 900 Russian officials were placed on a US visa ban list, as were 31 unnamed non-Russian officials who have supported Russia’s occupation of Crimea, the State Department said.

“Today, the United States is taking additional actions to ensure that the Kremlin and its enablers feel the compounding effects of our response to the Kremlin’s unconscionable war of aggression,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.
