2021 UTME: NIN helps in checking multiple malpractices -JAMB

By Funmilayo Adeyemi

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) welcomed the introduction of the National Identification Number (NIN) in its review exercise.

This, the board said, helped eliminate multiple registrations, identity theft and other malpractices associated with exams.

JAMB spokesperson Dr Fabian Benjamin revealed this in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said the partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) that made the use of the NIN mandatory in the registration process made it virtually impossible for hired applicants to register multiple times.

He, however, refuted a media report claiming that the introduction of NIN affected JAMB’s revenues and dropped them to 5.8 billion naira.

Benjamin argued that JAMB was neither a revenue generation agency nor aspired to be one.

“JAMB is not an income generating entity and as such is not interested in the ever increasing number of applicants.

“On the contrary, JAMB is concerned with how to fill the loopholes used by fraudsters to distort national data in order to compromise public reviews.

“As far as the jury is concerned, having a realistic number of candidates for its exam is a major achievement that only the partnership with NIMC made possible.

“We are determined to never compromise on the integrity of its processes due to the generation of large operating surpluses,” he said.

Benjamin noted that NIN was a good move because it helped clean up the system and restore its credibility.

According to him, it is a mistake of fact to denigrate NIN’s wonderful contribution to the UTME registration process by implying that it has had a deleterious effect on the financial base of the board of directors.

“On the contrary, JAMB greatly appreciates the partnership with NIMC which has led to the inadvertent benefit of revealing the actual number of applicants registered each year.

“Therefore, the board strongly believes that the introduction of NIN has helped resolve one of the fundamental channels of malpractice commission in exams through multiple claims, among others.” (NAA)
