The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday that 20,000 migrants had benefited from the organization’s health assessment between January and May 2021. IOM Chief of Mission Frantz Celestin, l ‘revealed during a training organized for editors-in-chief of news houses in Abuja. He revealed that migrants who benefited from the assessment migrate to various countries such as the UK, Canada and the US. “One of the functions of the organization is to support migrants in any way possible. During this examination period, more than 20,000 Nigerian migrants received a health check. “Also in 2020, we conducted 34,000 health assessments for people traveling to the countries mentioned above, even at the height of the COVID 19 pandemic.” We remain committed to helping migrants migrate through the right procedures and we will continue to educate the public on the downsides of irregular migration, ”he said. Célestin reaffirmed the importance of the media in the fight against irregular migration. “The relevance of the media in all aspects of human activity, especially in the area of better management of migration, cannot be overstated. “Media engagement is imperative given the urgent need to promote safe and regular migration as well as to discourage irregular migration. “IOM’s role goes hand in hand with that of a strong and impartial media to enlighten, mobilize and sensitize members of the public and stakeholders in this country,” he said.
