Two public servants were arrested on Friday at a Grade I Area Court, Karu, Abuja, for alleged failure to present a suspect in court.
Police charged Abdul Hafsat and Yahaya Akeem with joint act and detection of a criminal.
The attorney for the prosecution, Mr. Ade Adeyanju, told the court that the matter was reported to Karu Police Station, Karu Site, Abuja.
Adeyanju told the court that sometime in October 2021, the complaint entrusted N4 million to Seidu Haruna of the Karu Abuja site, currently at large for land located at plot 504 Karu Village Extension Abuja.
Adeyanju said the land was found to belong to someone else and Haruna agreed to reimburse him for all the money collected.
He said that Haruna had so far repaid N2.6 million with a balance of N1.4 million.
The crime, he said, contravenes the provisions of articles 79 and 167 of the Penal Code.
He said that during the police investigation, Haruna was released on police administrative bail to the defendants with instructions that both should present him when necessary, but they did not comply with the intention of allowing him to escape criminal justice.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The judge, Mr. Anas Mohammed, allowed the defendants to pay a bail of 1.5 million naira each with a guarantee for the same sum that must live within the jurisdiction of the court.
Mohammed ordered that the bondsman must be a GL12 officer in the civil service, his first letter of appointment, letter of confirmation and last letter of promotion must be submitted to the court.
He adjourned the case until December 12 for hearing.
