History no dey smile for Werder at all. Bayern don win all 18 Bundesliga meetings between the two sides, with goal difference of 60:4, and for the last 13 matches Bayern no allow Werder score even once — no team don get longer run like that against one opponent for Bundesliga history. Against reigning champions, Werder still dey wait for dia first point: 18 defeats and 5:71 goals.
But Werder no be the side wey people dey beat anyhow this season. Coach Fritzy Kromp team gather 16 points from the first eight games and dem dey sit inside the top group. Dem beat SC Freiburg 4:3 at home, then win 3:0 against Hoffenheim for the rescheduled seventh matchday game. Away from home though, e no go well: dem lost 2:3 for Wolfsburg, then lost again for Leverkusen. For DFB-Pokal dem also reach quarter-final — 90 minutes against Mainz end goalless before Sarah Gutmann score two times for extra time to seal 2:0.
Gutmann, na 20-year-old Austria international wey join Werder for January, and she tell DFB.de say the good start don give the team momentum and confidence. She talk say dem set dia target for mid-table before the season started, so anything pass that na bonus, and the togetherness inside the squad plus the work of Kromp and her staff na the reason dem dey fly. She add say games wey everything dey on the line get special sweet, and for her, cup and league get the same weight — if dem want lift the cup, dem must beat any opponent wey stand for front. Dem also achieve dia aim to still dey inside the cup when winter reach. Werder dey just one point behind third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt.
Bayern go miss some players for the match. Coach José Barcala no go get the services of some of im squad: one dey deal with reaction for her knee joint, the captain get knee complaint, and another one dem dey manage her load. One player dey suspended after red card against Leipzig, while one return to the squad after ankle ligament tear and another come back after muscular problem. Bayern eight straight wins to open the season na something dem only do before for 2020/21 — that year dem win dia first 17 league games.
