Osun Gov Ban NURTW Activities, Orders Arrest of Violators

Osun State Government don ban all activities of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for motor parks across the state. Governor Ademola Adeleke give the directive on Thursday after State Security Council meeting.

According to statement from Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the governor order security agencies to arrest anybody wey dey parade as official or executive of the union. The ban na to restore sanity for parks and stop collection of levies.

“The Governor has directed the Police and other security agencies to put a stop to all activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) forthwith in all our motor parks across the state. This order is to put a stop to the collection of all levies in our parks,” the statement read.

Adeleke also direct police and other security agencies to arrest violators for possible prosecution. “I hereby direct the Police and other security agents to stop all activities of the union in all our parks across the state. I’m not saying you should close the parks, but you should not allow anyone to operate in the parks in the name of the union. Anyone found contravening this order should be arrested for disturbance of public peace,” the governor state.

Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, don back the suspension of all motor parks. Dis one follow the leadership crisis wey dey rock NURTW and the subsequent suspension of union leadership and all transport union activities for Osun State.

ALGON make this known during meeting jointly held by NURTW, RTEAN, Motorcyclists and Tricyclists Union, Chairmen of 30 Local Government Councils and Ife East Area Office, Modakeke. Dem resolve to back the suspension.

The crisis within the union don become security threat to the state, especially to members of public wey dey rely on public transportation. In statement jointly signed by Hon. Samuel Idowu Abiodun, chairman ALGON Osun State, Olubisi Oladosu, General Secretary, and union spokesperson Hon Mufutau Adegbite, dem say the suspension of union leadership by local government chairmen na for exercise of dem constitutional powers and authority over public motor parks.

Dis one dey in line with Paragraph 1(e) of Fourth Schedule of 1999 Constitution (as amended), wey should remain in force pending further review. Dem remark say as temporary measure, there should be leadership for transport services in the state to protect businesses of transport operators and members of public.

“After extensive deliberations with all units and branches of NURTW, RTEAN, Motorcycles and Tricycle Unions in the state and consultations with relevant stakeholders, including traditional rulers, another members of transport unions have been appointed as Caretaker Management Committee in the state pending further consultations with National Secretariat of the transport unions to elect substantive state leaders for the union,” dem say.

The members include Chief Kazeem Oyewale as State Chairman, Mutiu Ayinde as State Secretary, Luqman Ahmed as State Treasurer. For RTEAN, dem get Rasheed Ayinde as State Chairman, Mufutau Adebisi as State Secretary, and Wahab Maruf Dodo as State Treasurer. For Motorcyclists and Tricyclists Union, dem get Ismaila Raimi as State Chairman, Adebayo Tajudeen as State Secretary, and Tajudeen Akeem as State Treasurer.

Dem remark say all property of union should be handed over to these people while security agencies dey urged to provide necessary assistance for seamless handover. ALGON and all branches of transport unions appreciate efforts of Nigeria Police Force for swift response in averting bloodshed last Monday and restoring normalcy to all motor parks.

ALGON call on all stakeholders to cooperate with new caretaker management committee to ensure seamless operations for all motor parks across 30 local government areas and Ife East Area Office. The union equally call on security agencies to provide necessary support to new caretaker management committee and continue security surveillance at all motor parks and garages to ensure safety of transport operators and commuters. ALGON promise to continue engagement of all relevant stakeholders to find lasting solution to the crisis.
